days 5 through 12

i've been a bit behind in keeping up this blog. my apologies. not much to report other than now on day 12 without any solid food; just protein shakes.  i can't believe i've not craved ANY thing. typically, i eat EVERY thing that isn't nailed down.  this 14-day diet certainly breaks you from mindless eating. i even have temptations in the house, too, but have not had the inclination to taste or devour. i'm really proud of me.

two more days until surgery day. i've been shoppping for more supplies for at least two weeks--benefiber, pepcid, and more bandages.

three days ago i had three teeth extracted, all of them my chewing teeth. so that should aid me in keeping on track cuz i won't have any teeth to grind my food. however, by the time i get to the tough meat portion of the diet progression, i may have new partials and then it will be easier, i hope. otherwise i'll be pureeing food for a longggggggggggggg time.

today and tomorrow i'm spending cleaning up apartment and doing laundry.  then gonna take long shower and give myself a pedicure and a shave. (don't want the docs to get their hands hung up in the bush, if u know what i mean and i think you do. :)) )

got more supplies to pick up tomorrow like a water filter, some bottled water and more protein drinks.

i need to pack a few things for hospital stay, i guess.  i've not had an overnight stay in one in decades, so i don't know what is provided for you, but i'm taking my own toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.  hope i get one of those cool water bottles but, if not, i'll take my blender bottle.  that is the coolest invention. i love the stainless steel blender that keeps the protein from clumping in your liquids.  check them out at blenderbottle.com,.  they can do so much more than blend protein.

back to cleaning.

days 3 and 4

day three (thursday) was spent being shuttled from clinic to clinic, visiting doctors, nurses; getting various tests and labs done and getting preadmitted to hospital.  surgery is set for july 26 after lunch. that's my son's birthday, too. we'll have to celebrate a few days early.

amazing how much the protein shakes fill you up and you can go a whole day and night without craving food. went shopping thursday and got more atkins protein shakes. unfortunately the mocha latte was almost sold out. i got what was left on shelf plus a couple cartons of the milk chocolate delight shake.  omgggggggggggggg how delicious is that?  it is to die for.  so much more tasty than chocolate milk.  i will be going back and stockpiling on that flavor. i had one for breakfast and one for lunch today. maybe i'll ease in a snack later tonite and have another along with the big 40gram isopure.  gotta squeeze in some water, too.  it is so hard to get in required amounts of water, since i've never been a water drinker, but i'm trying and day by day succeeding.

also bought the required medical supplies — gauze, tape, bandaids. hope i got enuf to last a week or two. i should get few more boxes of gauze just to be sure.

it'll be interesting to see how the weekend plays out, although i don't think i'll have any problems as the need to "graze" is nil. yes, i do have grazing food still around, especially chips and crackers. i think there are pretzels, too.  kinda cool to look at that stuff and say thanks but no thanks.  i'll find someone to give them too as i don't like to toss it in garbage.

it is nice to have a clean kitchen and empty refrigerator. now to clean up rest of house.

day 2

got through the first day of liquid diet without any problems or hunger pangs.  on second day, and the brain is not even messing with my mind. :))

i'm doing atkins protein shake for breakfast
flavored waters in between
mid afternoon is a protein powered drink
more flavored water
dinner is the big yummy isopure protein drink
i think i will fix some sugar-free jello tonite for munching the rest of the week as well as make some margarita popsicles for nibbling on.
two days, 14 more to go.  seems like an eternity to go without any of my favorite food groups — meat, veggies, breads, fruits and starches.  but this won't last forever. if others who have decided to go this route have taken this step in the journey and succeeded, then so shall i.  food begone!
it is nice not having to wonder 'what's for dinner?' or not having to clean up after messing up the kitchen.

i go for my last educational class tomorrow and meet with physician. getting excited to have this done.

almost time

today is the last day of consuming food as i have been accustomed to for many years.  tomorrow i start the two-week liquid diet in preparation for gastric bypass surgery.  i've never had to deprive myself of food for such a long stretch before, so this will be a monumental challenge. however, it is one i am willing to take.  additionally, i am looking forward to not having to  worry about cooking and doing dishes for next month or longer.  yippppppppeeeeeeee.

what is on the menu?  all clear liquids — water, tea, coffee, broths — along with protein shakes (65 grams daily), sugar free jello and popsicles.

in a way, it's like being on death row; the hour is arriving and i am asked to determine my last meal.  so many choices, not enough time.  i'm thinking i'll go out with chinese — chicken and veggies  plus a couple of extra egg rolls. maybe some hot and sour soup.

tonite i stock up on protein drinks  (isopure and atkins mocha latte). yummmmmm.  i have plenty of sugar free drink mixes to help with getting down the 64 oz of water daily; plus i can make popsicles cheaper than buying them and in my favorite flavors, too.  margarita ones will be first on the list.
